Honestly, we don’t know what we’ve started here at Clayways. Every week our studio fills with the sound of spinning wheels, gentle laughter, and the occasional “oops… that was meant to be a bowl!”; and somehow, out of all the clay, glaze and giggles come some of the most incredible creations we have ever seen.
Our students truly blow us away. One minute they are nervously sitting at the wheel wondering which end of the sponge to use; the next, they are producing mugs that could be in a gallery or sculptures that make us say “hang on, you must have done this before!”
We see people who have never touched clay before create pieces that tell a story; mugs with personality, bowls with attitude, sheep that somehow look smug, and vases that could give IKEA a run for its money. There is such joy in watching someone realise that they can make something beautiful (even if it started out as a “practice lump”).
Every week we are amazed not just by what our students make but by how they make it. The creativity, the courage to try new techniques, the patience when something goes a bit wonky (because let us face it, it always does before it does not); it is pure magic.
So if you are one of our lovely potters, we just want to say thank you. You make Clayways what it is; a place full of laughter, learning, and a little bit of clay in unexpected places (how does it always end up in your hair?).
We cannot wait to see what you come up with next. Whether it is your first coil pot or your fiftieth masterpiece, you continue to surprise and inspire us every single week.
