One-to-One Pottery Tuition | Private Pottery Lessons | £75 per Session

Learn pottery with expert one-to-one tuition – 2 hours just about you!

If you’d like to learn pottery properly, nothing compares to private tuition.

Our one-to-one pottery lessons are designed entirely around you, giving you dedicated time with an experienced tutor to help you develop your skills, build confidence and enjoy working with clay in a relaxed, friendly environment.

Whether you’re a complete beginner, returning to pottery after many years or looking to refine existing techniques, every session is tailored to your experience, goals and learning style.

Learn exactly what you want to learn

Unlike a traditional pottery class, there isn’t a fixed syllabus. You decide what you’d like to achieve and we’ll guide you every step of the way.

Choose to focus on:

  • Pottery wheel throwing
  • Handbuilding techniques
  • Slab, coil and pinch pottery
  • Sculptural ceramics
  • Surface decoration and texture
  • Glazing techniques
  • Trimming and finishing
  • Kiln management
  • Or combine several techniques in one session

If you have a particular project in mind, bring along your ideas. Whether it’s a favourite mug, serving bowl, sculpture or something you’ve seen on Pinterest, we’ll help you bring it to life.

Personal coaching that accelerates your progress

One-to-one tuition allows us to identify the small adjustments that make the biggest difference.

We’ll help you improve:

  • Body position and posture
  • Hand placement and clay control
  • Pressure and consistency
  • Centring techniques
  • Shape and form
  • Confidence on the wheel
  • Problem-solving and troubleshooting

With personalised feedback throughout your session, you’ll quickly develop techniques that become natural habits, helping you progress faster than you would in a larger class.

Perfect for beginners and experienced potters

Private pottery tuition is ideal if you:

  • Have never worked with clay before
  • Want to learn wheel throwing properly
  • Prefer individual attention
  • Feel nervous about joining a group class
  • Want to improve existing skills

  • Want to develop work to sell or exhibit

Whatever your ambition, we’ll help you achieve it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most of our pieces can be personalised with names, dates, handwritten messages, or children’s drawings. You can upload your document on the order form or if you have problems with this, once you’ve placed your order, simply email us the details (and any photos of handwriting) to hello@clayways.co.uk using your full name as the subject line. For the clearest results, please send handwriting on plain white paper using a dark pen. If you’d like to chat through your ideas before ordering, we’re always happy to help — just send us a message.

Every piece is handmade to order in our Cheshire pottery studio, so please allow four weeks for us to create your item plus delivery time. We handcraft, personalise, glaze, and kiln-fire each piece individually — that’s what makes it unique. If you need something for a specific date or occasion, please let us know and we’ll do our best to help.

We offer free shipping in the UK on all orders over £30. All items are carefully packaged and shipped via a tracked parcel delivery service for peace of mind. Your finished piece will be securely wrapped to ensure it arrives safely. We have flat rate delivery costs for the rest of the world and these are shared at the point of order.

Most of our ceramics are available in a range of soft, natural glaze colours — see the options on each product page for what’s currently available. Many personalised items can also be finished with a hand-painted gold, silver, or copper gilt edge for an extra touch of elegance. If you have a specific colour in mind for a bespoke order, just ask — we’d love to help.

Every piece of pottery at Clayways is individually handmade and glazed, so no two are ever exactly the same. The photographs on our website are examples of previous work, and your finished piece may vary slightly in colour, pattern, and glaze effects. That’s part of the beauty of handmade ceramics — your piece is completely unique.

Yes — all our functional kitchenware is made from durable high-fired stoneware and finished with food-safe glazes, designed to be enjoyed for years. We recommend hand-washing to preserve the glaze and any personalisation for as long as possible. With gentle care, your piece will stay beautiful through everyday use.

Yes! For personalised ring dishes, coasters, and wedding favours we offer tiered volume discounts at checkout: 5–9 items receive 10% off, 10–15 items 15% off, 16–25 items 20% off, and 26+ items 25% off. Each favour also comes packaged in its own velvet drawstring bag, ready to gift.

For personalised items we cannot accept returns unless faulty.  Your statutory rights are not affected. For purchased items you can return in original condition with original packaging and the cost of shipping is to be borne by the purchaser.  We recommend tracked and insured shipping.  Refunds will be made within 3 working days of return of item in original, as new condition.

"What a fantastic day at Clayways! Tracy was amazing from start to finish, guiding us through the different techniques from hand-building, to throwing on the wheel, to using slabs! Her knowledge of the clay and how to work with it is fantastic! We all produced some pots that we came away feeling really proud of!"
Alice Lambert

"Had an absolute blast this morning playing with clay at ClayWays with Tracey. We went as a group of four and after abit of time gathering some inspiration we all got to work. It was such a relaxing time. Chatting, listening to music and creating our pieces. Tracey was so knowledgeable and patient, giving tips and tricks were needed while also letting our creative juices flow and we all managed to make some really lovely pieces. We can't wait go back again to finish them off with paint and glaze. I would fully recommend ClayWays to my friends and family"
